September 26, 2024 | From Pastor Matt and the Renfrew & Daybreak Teams

Dear Renfrew and Daybreak Community -

Thank you so much for signing up for our Level Up training morning on Saturday September 28. Our goal and intention was to provide you with some high quality and practical tools as you serve God in his church. This is something that we are committed to providing more of in this next year to make sure that we are serving out of not only a passion but also an increasing competence in what we do.

We know that September is a busy month for many of you with the start of school activities, the fall routine taking shape and a weekend full of things that have to get done. In light of the busyness that some of you are probably feeling, we have made the decision to postpone the Level Up training morning due to the response that we received. We know that this is a felt need but we need to expand the options that were being presented as well as provide child care for some of you to be able to attend. Over the next year, we will be elevating some training events throughout the year.

I am confident that he who began a good work in you will complete it. Thank you being a part of our network churches - we are so excited with what God is doing and will continue to do. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Matt for the Renfrew and Daybreak teams

November 9, 2023 | From Pastor Matt and Council

Dear Renfrew Baptist Church family -

We want to thank you for your patience especially over the last few weeks as we have attempted to “get back” into our building. It does feel like it has been many years rather than just a few months. The plan as of today (Thursday) is to be in our building once again for Sunday. I need you to know that there will be many parts of the building that are not accessible as it is still an active construction site so we need you to be aware that there will not be a chance (quite yet) to go wandering through our building. It is also important that we supervise our children so that no one gets hurt or finds themselves in a place that they shouldn’t be.

Tomorrow (Friday) - we are asking you to pray as we have a couple inspections from the city that will determine if we have partial occupancy for this Sunday. We know that the building is not the church, we all are the church but we also know that the building is significant to many of our faith journeys over the years. Could you commit to praying for the inspections on Friday? Would you also pray specifically that the fire inspection would go off without an issue?

We look forward to welcoming you back into our space and continue to build on the legacy that we have behind us and the one we will contribute to in the future!

Blessings on you friends -

Matt for Darin F (Building Liaison) and the Council

November 1, 2023 | From Pastor Matt and Council

Dear Renfrew Baptist Church -

As we cross into the month of November which certainly has its own challenges in itself whether it is the daylight savings time (remember fall back is this week) or the long dark days that remind us winter is right around the corner. Please know that we are so excited with what these next few months will be for us as a church as we have an opportunity to watch a Christmas play on December 3 and participate in all the great things that happen over the Christmas season at Renfrew.

We had a great night last night handing out chocolate bars and potato chips for our Great Candy Giveaway (abbreviated version). It was great to be back in the community and interacting with our neighbours who are as excited as we are to have us back in the building.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to access our building as we originally had planned for this Sunday. Chandos (our contractor) has worked extremely hard to make it happen but they were unable to overcome some of the last barriers that need to be taken care of so that we can have a partial occupancy allowance. I know personally for Darin (Building Lead), Jamie (Council Chair), and our staff this is incredibly disappointing for us all. I do know that good things come to those who wait and a one-week delay is minor in the grand scheme of things during this process.

This means on Sunday November 5, we will be meeting with our network partner - Daybreak Community Church at their location in Airdrie. There were some other options that we looked at away from Grace Baptist Church but none of them seemed as feasible as being with our partners at Daybreak. The service will begin at 10:00 am at 2104 Yankee Valley Blvd in Airdrie.  We will have childcare and many of the elements that you would expect at Renfrew will be the same. There is even coffee available at 9:30 am if you want to come early.

We know that this arrangement is not ideal but would encourage you to make the effort to join us this Sunday in Airdrie. We would love to celebrate with great expectation of what God is doing in both of our churches that support each other through our network relationship.

Once again, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support (in words and in attendance and in support) for the time that we have been outside of our normal building. We have seen an increase in our attendance as well as in our environment while at Grace Baptist Church. We know that any time there are changes to our normal rhythm of life there is a healthy amount of sacrifice required and we thank you for making that sacrifice over the last few months. There is so much excitement on what God is going to do in and through us as we come back into our space on November 12.

Thanks for being a part of Renfrew Baptist Church -

Matt for the Renfrew Baptist Church staff and Council

May 25, 2023 | From Pastor Matt and Council

This is an exciting Sunday for us as we celebrate the 65-year history of Renfrew Baptist Church in its present (and future) location while looking towards the future and the impact that we will continue to have in the community that we are a part of.  It doesn’t matter if we know the building on 1204 Renfrew Drive as Temple Baptist or now as Renfrew Baptist Church - our passion for our immediate community has not changed.

As a church, we are embarking on building another piece of our legacy when we renovate our current space starting on June 1, 2023.  In regards to our upcoming renovation, we are wondering if you, our congregation would be willing to help us a bit on Sunday after church.  There is much equipment to move and place in different spots to ensure that the renovation can happen in a timely manner.  We also need to move some stuff to Grace Baptist Church so that we can hit the ground running on June 4.

If you are willing to help for a bit - we will provide pizza as close to the “time” that we are done as we can!  We just need you to register with Pastor Matt so that he can be prepared for what will happen on Sunday.  Our belief is that it will take about 45 mins or less at Renfrew Baptist Church.

In regards to where we will be holding our services from June 4 to September 3, the location is:  Grace Baptist Church.  The address for the church is:  2670 Radcliffe Drive SE.  We will be meeting in the Chapel which is located alongside of Memorial Drive.  There will be a bit of an orientation for the first few weeks of our time there.  The service will start at 10:30 am and we are expecting to hold children’s ministry and other normal Sunday activities there.  It will be important for you to continue to check your email and cell phones as we will communicate regularly through this process.

One final thing is that there will be items that are available for you to take home if you are able to take them on Sunday.  If you are interested in some of these items listed below, please respond to Pastor Matt at:  matt@renfrewbaptist.ca.

The items available are:

* Pews
* 2 Fridges
* Bulletin Boards
* Speakers

Renfrew Baptist Church Council and Pastor Matt

December 2, 2022 | From Pastor Matt and the Council

This Sunday marks a moment in the history of Renfrew Baptist Church. Renfrew Baptist Church has always been a bit ahead of where people expected it to be. Years ago, when the present building was first built, it was constructed with the thought that one day it would need to be renovated for the future.

As you drive in each Sunday, you might have driven by the site where the United Church used to be and are reminded that we are still called to the community that God has placed us in. Who would have known those many years ago that we would have an even greater call to be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving in the church family and in our communities?

Our church building has served us well for more than 60 years - a legacy given to us by our churches founders - and one we want to build on now.

We are renovating not just for our needs in 2022 but for our needs in 2042 - to give us the functionality we need to continue using this space for ministry purposes as they change and shift over the years.

The renovations we have planned - including updating the sanctuary, replacing our kitchen, enhancing the fellowship hall, reinvigorating our exterior and replacing our roof, windows and other structural components - will be a gift, both to our current congregation and to the future Renfrew family.

This is an opportunity to continue the legacy of our funders - investing in maintaining and improving our building so that it continues to be a space that allows us to be the hands of feet of Jesus, both within and outside of our church family.

Over the last four weeks, we have been talking about making a commitment or pledge for the future. This Sunday December 4 is going to be all about that. Some of you might want to fill out the pledge form early if you are not going to be there while some of you who will be with us in church will want to bring along your pledge card.

Please know that we won’t be asking you to put your name on the pledge card – this is between you and God. The pledge card helps us understand for the future; what will we need to mortgage for the remaining balance.

In a real high level, we have about $750K ready for this renovation. We still have $200K in our bank account above the $750K. The renovation will cost about $750K more than the original $750K so we together need to raise and mortgage about $750K. Please pray about your commitment over the next 3 years to our building fund.

We are going to celebrate our commitments by getting together for a Celebration Luncheon on Sunday. Right after the morning worship service, we will hang out around food and celebrate where God is taking us over the next few years as a church.  Please register simply so we can plan the food accordingly.

Thank you for being the church! Thank you for being a church that thinks bigger than itself! Thank you for believing that God is calling us to impact our community. Thank you for being you.

Matt for the Renfrew Baptist Church Staff and Council

May 5, 2022 | From Renfrew Baptist Church Council

Dear Renfrew Baptist Church family -

As we begin this month of May, we wanted to take a minute to thank you for your contribution to the ministry of Renfrew Baptist Church. We are continually amazed at our congregation and the way that God has orchestrated you all to be a part of it. We are excited for the last Sunday in May where we will “officially” kick-off our Renovation Capital Campaign with a fun pizza party after the morning service. There will be more details to follow but make sure to book this date off in your calendar!

In light of our preparations to be ready to renovate our church, it has become increasingly apparent that our focus needs to be on our church building and not the other buildings that we currently own. We have come to the realization that acting as landlords is not our forte, and that we are at the point where significant financial investment in renovations to our 2nd parsonage (1408 Renfrew Drive) would be required, which we do not believe would be financially prudent at this time. On May 1, we met with Lorie (our current tenant) and informed her that we will be moving to sell the 2nd parsonage within this year. As a council, we shared this at our Community Gathering and Prayer time held on Sunday night.

We know that there is a wealth of emotions that comes with a decision like this. This decision was not made lightly nor was it made without personal care. In our meeting with Lorie, we assured her that she will be not left alone to figure out what her next accommodations will look like and we communicated to her that we would be willing to cover some expenses that she will incur as she moves in the fall. Many of our council members have close relationships with Lorie and although this decision is incredibly hard because of the personal connection, we as a council believe that it is the right move to make at this time for the future of Renfrew Baptist Church.

Parsonage #2, with Lorie living in it for over 25 years, has been a legacy of Renfrew Baptist Church. Lorie welcomed and cared for numerous people who needed the deep love and care that Lorie was always there with open arms to provide.  We loved that this parsonage was used for something greater than what it was originally bought for. Now those funds can be repurposed into our main church building helping to finance a significant amount of the expected costs of this project. Little did our fore-fathers know what they originally provided us, which we are extremely grateful for today and pray that they would be proud of where we are as a church.

We understand that there may be questions, concerns or comments as you read you this - please feel free to reach out to the council at: council@renfrewbaptist.ca

Blessings -

Renfrew Baptist Church –

Thank you for your commitment to our church, it is both encouraging and humbling. Your engagement through the pandemic has been such a powerful testimony to what God is desiring for us as a church. Over a week ago, we had a congregational meeting where we laid out two decisions that we need to make as a church for our next congregational meeting on Wednesday March 9. In light of that meeting, there was a wealth of information that we shared and we wanted to provide you with time to work through what God is saying to you about our exciting future.

The two PowerPoint presentations with all the information are located online. Contact the church office if you would like access. There are a couple things that we would ask you to do:

  1. Pray for wisdom as we work to make the best decision for our church

  2. Ask questions of council if you are looking for more clarity - you can reach them at council@renfrewbaptist.ca or click the link to access a form which will be directed to council.

Thanks again - we are so excited to see you this Sunday as well as continue to work together as we look towards the future!

Renfrew Baptist Church –

As we move towards the end of the October, one of the key ways that we serve our Renfrew community is through the Great Candy Giveaway.  It is a great chance to get to know our neighbourhood as well serve them by providing some great treats for their kids.  In that understanding, the Great Candy Giveaway is only a few weeks away and we need your help as a church!  Please bring your candy donations to church, make a monetary donation or just commit to helping as our goal is to make at least 300 bags!

We will also need physical help that evening and would love for our church community to join in the fun of that night.  If you need more information, please contact Melanie F.

Finally, although we are still in the midst of restrictions due to COVID, we have two spaces at the church to be able to host you in.  The first one is our normal space upstairs in the sanctuary which can hold about 40-50 people while our newly created downstairs worship space which is a live stream of our service but will provide you the opportunity to “worship” together in our church.

Thanks for being who you are - I am proud to say that we are Renfrew Baptist Church.

September 25, 2021 | Update From Pastor Matt

Dear church family -

The weather certainly has changed our perspectives on what fall might be this week and my hope is that you have had the chance to go outside and enjoy the beautiful land that we enjoy.  I wanted to take a moment and just remind you of a few things that we are important for you to know as we continue to work to protect ourselves and our community in the midst of this pandemic.

I know that there are a wealth of differing opinions and thoughts on the way forward with COVID and I certainly do not want to entertain a discussion about it as it will only further “mute” our influence with each other and our community.  I do want to encourage us, at Renfrew Baptist Church, to be intentional in our efforts to continue to nurture our community.  This will take hard work on all of our parts but I do know that we are a resilient group of people.

One of the ways that we can accomplish this is by continuing to gather on Sunday mornings.  We have (and are continuing to work) hard at creating two spaces in our building for us to worship each Sunday.  These spaces are socially distanced and will allow you to see other people and continue to feel like you are a part of something “bigger” than just yourself as an individual, which sometimes we can feel like we are facing in this pandemic.  We have opened up the fellowship hall so that you can have a communal experience and we can accommodate most (if not all) the people in our church.

For the time being, we have made the tough decision to not hold any “fellowship” events that are facilitated by the church.  As much as we want to, we believe that our testimony to our Renfrew community outside of the church is stronger by simply choosing to wait for our province to recover from this 4th wave.  We desire to get together but we also desire to be great neighbours to our community who need Jesus.

We also understand that you might make a personal decision to just stay home and we are committed to still providing an excellent online experience for you.  Please stay connected to us - send us a text - give us a call or join us on a Sunday morning.  You are important to us and we love the opportunity to do life with you.  We are praying for you and your family in this season!

September 18, 2021 | Update From Pastor Matt

Greetings Church –

This week has certainly been another experience in the journey that COVID-19 has brought us.  Words such as social distancing, restrictions, vaccine records and capacities have become familiar words that we have added to our vocabulary.  The “roller coaster ride” that COVID-19 continues to be is something that I am sure we would all love to be able to get off of.  And yet, despite all the external chaos, I am reminded that God, the Alpha and Omega, is still in control.

“Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus.”

(Hebrews 3:1 – NIV)

We can become distracted as we wrestle through our own debates on the government’s approach to things.  We can find ourselves in debates where at the end of the conversation we aren’t even sure what we are arguing about.  We can feel like we personally have a “better way.”

I am reminded that the Jesus way – the mission and message of Jesus was to simply help people experience and extend the kingdom of heaven on earth.  As Paul wrote “to be agents of reconciliation (or hope, or grace or even kindness) to a world that needs it.”  I am not saying it is easy, trust me.

Hillel was a Jewish leader right after Jesus died (about 110 AD) and he said poignant words for us today.  “"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And being only for myself, what am 'I'?”  He followed it up by saying this, “Jesus is life to me; the rest is commentary.”  For me personally, I need the space in my head and my heart to be occupied by Jesus, not what is happening in the pandemic or what side of the vaccine debate I am on.

Bruxy Cavey, a pastor and author from the Meeting House in Ontario, said this, “Christ followers are called to provoke one another, to jab one another, to poke and prod one another toward loving well and living well.”

This week I once again found myself in the “trap” of self-absorbed questions about our rights as a church.  In no way am I am saying that we don’t protect our freedoms. And yet, I am always intrigued that “the church” causes government (a mostly secular organization) to make exceptions for the church because they are concerned about our reaction?  To me, that is a slippery place to occupy when at the end of the day, we are called to be bearers of the good news.  Is the good news attached to the “need” for these exceptions?  Would government officials find an “ally” with the church in Canada? Could they count on us to pray for them as they make these complex decisions?

We know and understand the importance of “meeting together” and as the author in Hebrews 10 tells us, “let’s not give up the habit of doing this.”  As a church, we have sacrificed this for a long time.  It was an incredible experience together last Sunday, to hear our unified voices in worship and to hear the chatter of people in the building.  The “taste” of last Sunday might be why this past week’s announcement hit me as hard as the first announcement in March of 2020.

So, where do we go as Renfrew Baptist Church? First of all, we are NOT going to stop meeting together.  Yes, we have capacity and space limits and out of our posture to honor the government, we are going to do our best to enforce this.  This is not the time for us to not meet together nor is it the time to not follow the guidelines set out for us.

In line with these guidelines, at this time we will have around 40 people socially distanced and masked in the sanctuary as well as another 50 people socially distanced and masked in the Fellowship Hall downstairs.   The Fellowship Hall will be receiving a live stream of the service.  Children’s ministry will still be offered and will be in the educational wing of the church (dismissed part way through the service).

We know and understand that the Fellowship Hall isn’t like being “upstairs” in the sanctuary, and yet it will afford us the opportunity to still gather in our building.  We would ask that you honor each other by choosing to sit upstairs one week and then the next week sit downstairs.  As you read this, we are thinking through creative ways to use our parking lot over the next while to simply allow us a space to congregate after the service.  We will encourage you to enjoy time fellowshipping out in the parking lot as our space inside the building is limited with our social distancing requirements.

Trust me, this can feel like we are making lemonade out of tart lemons (and we are) but more importantly, the leadership team at Renfrew Baptist Church, wants this to be a viable option for us for the next few months if this is what we need to do to be together.  The next few months, let’s together make the most of every opportunity we might have to share the good news of Jesus.

Church Service on August 15

Meet at Renfrew Baptist Church @ 10:30 AM

Due to the smoke and poor air quality, today’s Outdoor Church service has been moved indoors. We will be meeting at 10:30 AM at Renfrew Baptist Church.

Hope to see you there! If you are unable to attend in person, the Service will also be live-streamed at 10:30 AM via YouTube.

Information for Sunday July 18 | From the Desk of Pastor Matt

I hope that you are enjoying the warmer than usual weather that we are experiencing as of late.  As much as we might struggle with the “heat” this summer, I do know that cooler weather is right around the corner.

I wanted to take a minute to make sure that you knew what was happening on Sunday with the Stampede Breakfast and the church service that will follow the breakfast.  The breakfast is going to happen rain or shine and will be at Daybreak Community Church (2104 Yankee Valley Boulevard, Airdrie).  We will plan on doing church after the breakfast (inside at Daybreak) at 11:00 am.  This service will primarily just be Renfrew people as Daybreak doesn’t normally do a service on their Stampede breakfast date.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Breakfast will happen from 9:00 am to 10:45 am.  Come and grab some great food and get to know our friends at Daybreak.

  2. Volunteers - we still need lots of volunteers and it will speak to our friends at Daybreak if we link arms with them as they impact their community.  Please shoot me an email and I will get you a “spot” to help out.

  3. Church Service will happen inside Daybreak at 11:00 am.  The service will involve worship being lead by Spencer and I will bring a short message.  We will plan on being done by noon.

Renfrew friends - I know that it is different helping another church, but you are healthy enough to do this.  This is a “kingdom” mindset that involves a large amount of generosity.  This is what God’s economy is all about and I am pumped to see where God will take all of this.  This is what churches should do for each other.

Thank you for your commitment to Renfrew and God’s work that is unfolding all around us.  Hang on!

Letter to our Neighbours in Renfrew Community

Dear Renfrew Community –

On behalf of Renfrew Baptist Church, we wanted to reach out to you to check in with you and see how you’re doing. We also want to inform you of something that is happening this Sunday at our church.  We are so thankful to be your neighbours on the corner of Russell Road and Renfrew Drive.  Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives in this special community.

For the last 10 months, we have all been learning the rhythms (and frustrations) of dealing with COVID-19.  So much of our lives has been stripped away and so many things have changed in all of our worlds.  Our leadership team made a decision, 10 months ago to not hold any in-person church services in our building until we felt that we could meet the regulations that our government leaders have put in place and keep our community safe.  To be honest, these have been a long ten months, as we have waited for the day where we could hold services in our building once again.

This Sunday, January 31, 2021, we are opening up in a very limited fashion for Sunday morning worship services with around 40 people in attendance.  We understand that having activity around our building again on a Sunday morning will certainly be a change from what you have seen in the last 10 months.  We are committed to being in FULL compliance with all of the regulations that the government has provided for us.  Some of these regulations include:  pre-registration to attend a service, very limited attendance (under 15% of our building capacity), masks required and provided when needed, doors opened just 10 minutes before the service and people dismissed 10 minutes after the service, as well as stringent disinfecting practices.  Please know that we are committed to being a “safe” place for our people as well as for you, our neighbours.

We understand that this might raise some questions for you and we want to make sure that you know we are available to answer any questions you may have.  These are unprecedented times and we are committed to continually evaluating our re-opening strategy in the days and months ahead.

Finally, if you have ever considered attending our community church, please do not hesitate to register by sending us a text at:  587-210-5355 or by sending us an email to:  register@renfrewbaptist.ca.  We would love to get to know you and your family – you are our neighbours!  You can also watch our service each Sunday morning at 10:30 am by searching for us on Youtube, simply search Renfrew Baptist Church YYC.

We care deeply for you and would love to be a part of your life in whatever ways we can.  If there is anything that we can pray for you about, please reach out to us so we can do that in this tough season of life for all of us.
